1. Scratch:-Significant abrasions with measurable depth. If you scraped your fingernail over a scratch, you could feel it.

2. Scuffing:
Light rub marks or abrasions with no appreciable depth.

3. Secondary Colors
Definition:The secondary colors are purple, green, and orange. They are created by mixing two of the primary colors.

4. Secretary-A secretary is a tall desk having a slanted front writing area, a low chest of drawers below, and a cabinet or bookcase on top.

5. Set Screw:-A small, gnurled screw that is finger-tightened to secure a shade or chimney into it's holder.

6. Shade:One of the basic components of your desk lamp, the shade sits above the light source and directs the light down toward your desk. The shade also protects your eyes by preventing you from looking a bare bulb. Lamp shades can come in many shapes from conical to oblong, but you will want to find one that directs the light from your lamp toward your work. Shades also come in many different colors and can be made of cloth, glass, plastic or metal.

7. Shade-A metal, glass, or fabric element designed to diffuse and direct the light produced by the flame. Can be both functional and decorative.

8. Shade Ring
Definition:A circular ring attached to a lamp or burner which holds the lamp shade. The shade may be attached with set screws, or merely sit in the ring.

9. Sheet Set
Definition:A sheet set includes a fitted sheet, flat sheet and pillowcases. All sets include two pillowcases with the exception of the Twin Set which includes just one pillowcase.

10. Side Chair
A side chair is an armless chair usually used as a dining chair. The seat may be wood or upholstered.

11. Sinumbra:-An improvement of the astral lamp. Characterized by a ring or doughnut shaped fount designed to cast more light downward and minimize the shadow caused by large, centrally located founts. These lamps are relatively tall compared to their width to maximize light output.

12. Skater's Lantern
Definition:A small lantern used as a night light and often depicted as being used by skaters at night as the circled an icy pond.

13. Slipper Chair:
A slipper chair is a small, high-backed upholstered chair. It often has a farily low seat and is used in bedrooms and smaller rooms for extra seating or dressing and putting on shoes.

14. Sliver:-A long, narrow flake.

15. Smoke Bell:Any domed device of metal or glass that is suspended above a lamp, particularly above the chimney, to reduce smoke and soot build up on the lamp fixture or ceiling.

16. Smoke Shade
Of similar design and purpose to the smoke bell, but generally much wider. These are most commonly seen in white milk glass.

17. Sofa:-A sofa is an upholstered piece of furniture designed to seat three or four people. Most sofas are fully upholstered with a high back and comfortable upholstered arms. Sofas can have attached or loose backs and either one, two, three, or four seat custions. Legs can be exposed or hidden under a skirt that falls to the floor. The best sofas have kiln-dried hardwood frames and eight-way hand-tied springs as well as down cushions and beautiful designer fabric covers.

18. Spear:-A term used to describe a large, cut class lamp prism, usually with a pointed end.

19. Spider-Another name for a tripod, or lamp shade holder.

20. Split
Definition:A separation of the metal along a seam due to stress, fatigue, or other outside forces.

21. Spreader or Spanner:A decorative metal element on a hanging lamp designed to keep the chains held apart and from twisting. Often the smoke bell is attached to some type of spanner or leveler.

22. Staining:
Cloudiness or other discoloration of the glass that can easily be seen. More severe than haze.

23. Stand Lamp
Definition:Generally, any lamp designed to be placed (on furniture) for illumination. Usually an intermediate size lamp which could be carried from place to place if needed, by grabbing ahold of the stem.

24. Stem
The portion of the lamp between the fount and the base. Can be one piece or made up of multiple pieces.

25. Stop Balls
Any plain or decorative metal balls (usually hollow) affixed to the chains of a ceiling extension which limit the amount of chain that can be retracted back into the mechanism. Also found on hanging lamps with counter-weights used to adjust their height.

26. Store Lamp:Commonly refers to a lamp used by merchants to illuminate their shops. A hanging lamp with a large (mammoth) fount and often a slanted tin shade for maximum light reflection.

27. Straw Mark:A line or fold often found on the surface of a molded glass object.

28. Stress or Age Crack-A fracture resulting from the aging of the metal. Common with thin stamped or pressed brass objects such as lamp collars and brass oil founts.

29. Striae
Small threads of glass molded into the surface of an article.

30. Student Lamp
Designed to eliminate undershadow and improve the downward light, student lamps are designed around a center post balanced by the fount on one side and the burner/shade on the other. Come in both single & double varieties.

31. Suspended Lamp:-Any lamp designed to hang from the ceiling. Often placed to illuminate the area under the lamp, such as a table or sitting area.

32. Swing Arm:
Some desk lamps come with a mechanism in the base that allows you to turn your lamp's light source 360 degrees without actually moving your lamp.
